Bausch + Lomb To Offer KeraSoft Custom Contact Lenses for Irregular Corneas

KeraSoft custom contact lenses will become available globally this year, says Bausch + Lomb.

These made-to-order soft contacts are designed for the correction of keratoconus and other corneal irregularities — problems that previously could be corrected only with rigid gas permeable contacts, hybrid contact lenses or eye surgery.

In addition to correcting keratoconus, KeraSoft custom contact lenses also can treat vision problems caused by other types of corneal irregularities caused by disease, trauma, corneal transplants and complicated laser surgery.

Traditionally, people with irregular corneas have been limited to hard or rigid gas permeable contact lenses, which resulted in reduced wear time for some. KeraSoft lenses can increase contact lens wearing time for some of these patients, B+L says. Bausch + Lomb will market and sell the lenses, which are manufactured by U.K.-based UltraVision CLPL. The roll-out will occur around the world in phases. Each KeraSoft lens will be custom-made for the patient’s exact needs and will offered to eye care professionals through B+L’s network of certified optical labs.

“This technology has totally transformed my view of contact lens management of keratoconus and irregular cornea patients,” said Joseph Barr, OD, vice president of Global Clinical & Medical Affairs and Professional Services in B+L’s Vision Care division.

KeraSoft custom lenses are produced with the latest soft and silicone hydrogel materials, using a patented process that enables the creation of complex lens geometries that offer comfortable wear and excellent vision, according to B+L. The custom lenses have received the Queen’s Award for Enterprise and Innovation in the United Kingdom.

“We are delighted that Bausch + Lomb will be making KeraSoft contact lenses available around the world, through its lab channel partners,” said J. Keith Lomas, group president and CEO of UltraVision CLPL.
