Biofinity Multifocal To Debut in June

Biofinity Multifocal will be introduced in the United States in June, reported a CooperVision representative at the Contact Lens Society of America meeting held last week in Austin. Biofinity is a family of silicone hydrogel lenses that currently includes a toric version for astigmatism.

The Biofinity Multifocal lens is designed to enable adult contact lens wearers with presbyopia to see clearly at all distances without reading glasses and enjoy all-day wearing comfort, according to CooperVision.

Biofinity Multifocal will be the first product to feature CooperVision’s new logo and product packaging, said the company.

SynergEyes (Carlsbad, Calif.) announced this week that its second-generation Duette brand silicone hydrogel hybrid contact lenses are now available from eye care practitioners across the United States. The announcement follows the initial release of Duette hybrid contacts in select markets late last year.

The design of the new FDA-approved hybrid lenses eliminates common problems associated with soft toric contact lenses for astigmatism correction, such as less-than-optimal vision, night vision problems and instability on the eye, according to the company. Read more…

Can Contact Lenses Slow Myopia?

New contact lenses may help slow the progression of nearsightedness in children.

Myopia (nearsightedness) is becoming increasingly prevalent in the United States and throughout the world. A recent multi-year study found that 41.6 percent of Americans were nearsighted in 1999 to 2004, up significantly from 25 percent in the early 1970s.

The primary cause of myopia progression in children appears to be axial elongation (lengthening) of the eyeball. Some researchers believe the key to slowing myopia in susceptible children is found in how light is focused in the peripheral retina. Read more…
